U.S. international Malik Tillman has scored two goals in as many games, raising hopes for USMNT fans about how the midfielder could perform in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. Tillman's form this season has warranted that, as he has contributed to 17 goals in 29 appearances for PSV Eindhoven.
Former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas has assessed Tillman's future with the USMNT on his State of the Union podcast, comparing the PSV Eindhoven star to other attacking midfield options such as Gio Reyna and Diego Luna. Lalas praised Tillman's technical ability and consistency, but is not convinced he can become a true star for the national team.
“He's an interesting player and when we have seen him, especially relative to... the Gios and stuff like that? Passable, but not lighting things up," Lalas said. "But I also don't think that he, you know, causes any problems. I don't think that he's ever going to be a star for the U.S. team.
“But I also think that was - whether it's Pochettino or anybody else - he's still going to continue to be called up. But he he lacks some of the cachet and some of the, I guess, the sexiness of others. But that doesn't mean that he can't be effective.”
