  • WHAT HAPPENED?

A report from The Athletic suggests that even though Mbappe himself was leaning towards joining Real Madrid at the end of the season, "influential members of his entourage" have been underwhelmed by the proposal from the Bernabeu. Current club Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, have offered Mbappe the chance to stay on his current salary, either short or long-term.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Real Madrid's offer is reported to be less than the deal they proposed to Mbappe two yeas ago, when he turned hem down to stay at PSG. Back then, the proposal is said to have been a €26 million (£22.2m/$28.0m) salary per season, as well as a €130m (£110.9m/$140.1m) signing bonus. His current wage at PSG is €75m (£64.0m/$80.8m) net, before bonuses, and The Athletic notes that Real Madrid cannot match such an offer. Even with a less lucrative contract on the table, Florentino Perez is hoping his efforts to convince Mbappe will be enough for him to pick Real.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Real Madrid have been trying to sign a now 25-year-old Mbappe for more than half his life. The Frenchman was invited to visit the club's facilities and train with their Under-12 squad when he was 11. Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich were all interested at that time too, but he wound up picking Monaco.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

Quite simply, Mbappe has to decide where he is playing football next season: Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid? That decision has not yet been made, although the latest report certainly suggests it is no given that he choose the Bernabeu. Having presented their offers, all the clubs can really do is wait. Carlo Ancelotti has suggested he believes Real Madrid already have enough attacking firepower, but Rodygo "would love" him to join.
