The end for Paul Mullin? Wrexham tipped to ditch club legend as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney told that only FOUR players are good enough for the Championship

Former Wrexham midfielder Waynne Phillips believes the newly-promoted League One side need to make big transfer moves this summer and that only four of the current squad are good enough for the Championship - namely defenders Max Cleworth, Dan Scarr, Lewis Brunt, and goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. He added that it is likely to be the end of the road for Mullin and fellow striker Ollie Palmer at the Red Dragons, and also wasn't sure if veterans James McClean, Steven Fletcher, and Jay Rodriguez would be good enough in the English second tier.

"The team that played on Saturday (against Charlton Athletic), only three of them were in the Wrexham team at the end of last season," Phillips told this week's Coridor Ansicrwydd podcast. "They've strengthened every summer, and that's what I see them doing again. If you stand still you won't go anywhere. There's a good nucleus there, but they need another six to nine new players. And that's what I expect to happen."

He added: "It will cost them to get rid of a few. I can't see Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer at the club next season. James McClean, Steven Fletcher, Jay Rodriguez and Matty James - can they do it in the Championship again? And will they offer enough to make Wrexham competitive? I've said for a long time that Max Cleworth is good enough for the Championship, so are Dan Scarr, Lewis Brunt and Arthur Okonkwo."

Wrexham secured an historic third-straight promotion in as many years from the National League to the Championship this weekend, and while many have helped them get to where they are, most notably Mullin and Palmer, football is a cut-throat sport, and there is no room for sentimentality. They are a long way down the pecking order and that is only likely to get worse when more signings are announced ahead of next season. But their contributions for this club will not be forgotten.

Before the matter of transfer signings and exits comes to pass, Wrexham round off their season away to Lincoln City on Saturday.
