Conor McGregor's whiskey, McDonald's & celebrating until 6am: Paul Mullin reveals all about the crazy night after Wrexham won promotion

The Red Dragons finally brought their 15-year absence from the Football League to a close when claiming the National League title in record-breaking style. Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney got the return they were looking for on considerable investment, allowing the playing and coaching staff to let their hair down during wild celebrations that dragged on until the early hours of the morning.

Mullin has said in his autobiography ‘My Wrexham Story’ of toasting promotion into League Two: “Things ramped up a bit when, about 1 a.m., round about the same time the booze ran out, we decided to head into town. The party at the Racecourse might have finished but the one in town was still going full pelt. There were people everywhere celebrating this amazing day – and they spotted us straight away, cheering, chanting and singing songs. If there was anyone living in Wrexham wanting a good sleep that night, I apologise. At one point we ended up in McDonald’s. It was quite mad actually. We walked in and the staff asked us behind the counter for a photo. Naturally we obliged, only to turn round and find a load of fans in there singing ‘F**k the Tories!’ It was made out in some of the papers that I’d started the chant. I didn’t, although if someone starts singing ‘F**k the Tories!’ I’m more than happy to join in. We found ourselves in a club where in no time we were up on stage singing Wrexham songs with the crowd (if you haven’t realised by now, I really am quite dangerous round a microphone). We also had a bottle of UFC legend Conor McGregor’s Proper No. Twelve whiskey so I decided to send him a photo. He replied the next day, which was just class.”

Mullin added on the party eventually being taken back at the Racecourse by those feeling a little peckish and bleary-eyed: “With the club so packed that we could barely move, and every bar way too busy, we rounded everyone up and headed back to the Racecourse. Having earlier drunk the hospitality suite dry, we made for the lounge on the other side of the ground where we sat and chilled and properly reflected on what we’d achieved. After a very long day, we were all starving. All we could find was bread and butter in the kitchen so, forget a celebratory banquet, that’s what we ate. One lad even buttered his bread with the dollop that had just landed on his head, the result of the odd thing being chucked every now and then across the room. Eventually, at about six in the morning, I nipped off for a kip. I lay on the physio’s bed for about twenty minutes and was just falling into a lovely sleep when Steve Parkin, the assistant manager, came in singing Wrexham songs to me at the top of his voice – ‘We’ve got Mullin, super Paul Mullin!’ I couldn’t believe it. ‘Jesus, get out – just leave me alone!’”

Wrexham kept the party going when taking in an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas – which was funded by Reynolds and McElhenney – with the intention being to pay another visit to Sin City in 2024 as Phil Parkinson’s side take aim at a top-three finish in League Two.
