Jamie Vardy's first three outings in a Cremonese shirt were forgettable, to put it kindly. Some Italian outlets have been far harsher, with Gazzetta dello Sport even calling for the veteran centre-forward's position in the squad to be "reviewed", but he went some way to silencing those critics at the weekend.
Cremonese headed into their home clash with Atalanta on a five-game winless run, which they ultimately extended to six with a 1-1 draw. But this was a much-improved display from Davide Nicola's side, who were dreaming of victory when Vardy finally broke his Serie A duck with only 12 minutes left on the clock.
It was a trademark effort from the Leicester City legend, too, as he fired a rebound high into the net on the half-volley. Lesser strikers would have mis-timed the shot and blazed high into the stands, but Vardy has made a career out of gobbling up those kinds of chances.
He also pulled out a perfect cartwheel and backflip to celebrate, much to the delight of the 11,052 crowd at the Stadio Giovanni Zini. Few players can pull off those kinds of acrobatics in their twenties, let alone at 38, which shows that Vardy is still remarkably fit and hungry to deliver entertainment to a new fanbase.
Unfortunately, the joy didn't last for long as Atalanta substitute Marco Brescianini equalised six minutes later with an arrowed drive to break Cremonese hearts. The draw leaves the newly-promoted side sat 11th in Serie A, but with rock-bottom Genoa up next, Vardy will fancy his chances of adding to his account and getting his team back to winning ways.
Age is just a number to the former England international, who told reporters after the final whistle: "I’m over the moon to get my first goal. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t get the three points. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. I feel great. I look after myself, make sure I do all the right recovery and as close to 100 per cent for each game as and when they come. If the manager wants me to play, then I’m all ready to go."
