Barcelona player ratings vs PSG: Ronald Araujo's red card leads to Champions League implosion as Xavi seethes and Joao Cancelo's rash challenge proves costly

A defensive nightmare, ridden with errors and poor decisions, saw Barcelona crash out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

Barca took the lead inside the first 15 minutes, as Lamine Yamal danced through PSG's backline before finding Raphinha, who couldn't miss from close-range. Things changed, though, when Ronald Araujo dragged Bradley Barcola down as he ran through on goal, earning himself a straight red for his clumsiness.

The tie turned on that incident, and ex-Barca winger Ousmane Dembele equalised on the night shortly before half-time, turning Barcola's angled cross into the roof of the net with Marc-Andre ter Stegen sprawling. The Parisians didn't need long to turn things round in the second half, either, as Vitinha scored with a drilled effort from outside the box before Kylian Mbappe made it 5-4 on aggregate with a clinical penalty.

Everything devolved from there. Barca boss Xavi had already been sent off for protesting a decision, while yellows were dished out in spades, and Mbappe then delivered the final blow in the 88th minute, smashing home after another Barca blunder at the back.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):

Made a handful of impressive stops. Couldn't really do anything about any of the PSG goals.

    Jules Kounde (5/10):

Shut down Mbappe for long periods, and looked Barca's most composed defender on the night. Then messed it up with an error to hand Mbappe the final goal.

    Ronald Araujo (2/10):

A nightmare. Deservedly sent off for a silly foul.

    Pau Cubarsi (7/10):

Put in a crunching tackle on Dembele within the first few minutes. Didn't shy away from the big occasion, and won all of his duels.

    Joao Cancelo (3/10):

Made the second silliest error of the night with a lunge to give a penalty away.

    Midfield

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Vital composure in the centre of the park when the rest of the game became messy. Wasn't enough on the night.

    Frenkie de Jong (4/10):

Not his finest showing at all. Completed just 19 passes and never got in the game.

    Pedri (6/10):

Hardly on the ball, but he was effective when he had it. Looked exhausted when removed after an hour.

    Attack

    Lamine Yamal (7/10):

Was immense for 30 minutes before being rather harshly taken off when Araujo was sent off.

    Robert Lewandowski (6/10):

His hold up play for Barca's goal was vital. Made some poor decisions in the final third that could have seen the game go the other way.

    Raphinha (8/10):

Got himself on the scoresheet again, and it wasn't an easy finish at the near post. Almost bagged a second with 15 minutes remaining. Has been impressive of late.

    Subs & Manager

    Inigo Martinez (5/10):

A first-half entrant in place of Yamal for defensive cover. Sloppy at the back.

    Ferran Torres (5/10):

A poor touch proved costly when he could have equalised. Can't be faulted for his running, though.

    Joao Felix (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Fermin Lopez (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Xavi (2/10):

Got his selection almost exactly right, but saw it marred by Araujo's red. Went one better and got himself sent off. Nightmarish.
