Wanyama focused on winning place at Tottenham Hotspur back

Victor Wanyama has revealed he was affected by the transfer speculation over his future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Admitting his move away from the North London side was close, Wanyama said what remains now is to work and fight to win Mauricio Pochettino's faith back.

“Of course I was unsettled with the transfer news because it was coming in the news every day,” Wanyama told Goal at Kasarani on Saturday.

“What happened in the transfer window is passed me now and my main focus is to train as hard as I can to make sure I regain my position in the team.

“I don’t think it is difficult to win my position back, I just need to push myself even harder and keep working hard in training to achieve the same and I know it will happen soon.”

After missing out on a late transfer to Belgian side Club Brugge, reports have now emerged Wanyama is among the players who have been shortlisted by Tottenham for a transfer exit in the January window.

On the Kenya friendly against Mozambique on Sunday, Wanyama said: “We have the chance to make the fans happy and must win this game for them [the fans].

“I missed the last friendly against [Uganda] and will want to do well this time around because I know Kenyans want to see us winning matches.

“I am impressed with some of the new players in the team and will continue to work with them as we build a team to challenge for the African Cup of Nations ticket.”

The Sunday friendly will be the last for the home team after the Libya build-up was cancelled ahead of Afcon qualifiers in November.

Kenya, who are drawn in pool G alongside Egypt, Togo, and Comoros, will start their qualifying campaign against the Pharaohs on November 11 away before they welcome Togo at Kasarani on November 19.
