At least 17 people are reportedly dead after a stampede took place at an Angolan stadium prior to a match on Friday.
A medical official at a hospital near the Estádio Municipal 4 de Janeiro in the northern city of Uige told Reuters that hundreds of fans had stormed the stadium gates ahead of a scheduled match between local sides Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo.
"Some people had to walk on top of other people," Ernesto Luis, director general of a local hospital, told Reuters . "There were 76 casualties, of whom 17 died."
Angola's state-run news agency Angop said the crowd pushed against barriers after failing to gain entry into the 8000-seat stadium, after which many fell and were trampled.
