The 26-year-old has been handed an invite to compete for a place in the Pharaohs’ team for the global tournament

Sam Morsy has applauded Wigan Athletic after he was named in Egypt’s 29-man preliminary squad for this summer World Cup.

The midfielder played a crucial role as the Latics secured promotion to the English Championship from League One, making 47 appearances and scoring three goals across all competitions.

The former Port Vale player made his maiden competitive appearance for the seven-time African champions in December last year during a World Cup qualifying tie against Ghana.

The Pharaohs, making their first appearance in the tourney since 1990, will be aiming to manoeuvre their ways past host country Russia, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group A.

And following the call-up, the midfielder has taken time to appreciate his club's manager Paul Cook, the first team staff and the players.

“I wouldn’t have got the call up without the manager, the assistant, the coach and all first-team staff, who have helped me with my game all season,” Morsy told club website.

“The players have also been great this season and made sure we all had a successful season. The Egypt staff watched and reviewed all my games so it was important I had a good campaign.”
