Nedbank Cup Weekend Preview: Minnows looking to upset elite guns

Two of the lower tier minnows in Mariveni United and African All Stars have already been beaten by their more fancied top flight opponents Mamelodi Sundowns and Polokwane City respectively in midweek.

For the likes of AcornBush United, Buya Msuthu, Days FC, United Rovers and Kwa-Dukuza United, the chance to announce themselves to the footballing world is still up for grabs.

They will face sides in the semi and professional levels this weekend, with Acornbush facing the high-flying Cape Town City, while Msuthu meet Bloemfontein Celtic.

As for Days FC, they welcome NFD side Mbombela United and United Rovers will also square off with a side in the country’s second tier when they visit Jomo Cosmos.

The inconsistent Ajax Cape Town will visit Kwa-Dukuza United, with the former looking to go one better than they did in 2015 when they finished runners-up to the Brazilians.

There will be two all PSL clashes as Free State Stars will be looking to avenge last Sunday’s defeat when they welcome Highlands Park on Saturday.

The other tie, will see the second instalment of the KZN derby when Golden Arrows once again host Maritzburg United.

The Abafana Bes'thende will be looking to return to winning ways following the humiliating 3-0 league defeat to Platinum Stars.

Last season's Nedbank Cup semi-finalists, Baroka travel all the way to the Mother City to meet FC Cape Town.
