'I think there are possibilities' - Asensio fuels Man Utd transfer talk ahead of crunch talks with Real Madrid

Marco Asensio has fueled rumours linking him with a potential transfer to Manchester United ahead of crunch talks with Real Madrid over his contract situation.

The Spain international enjoyed another season of silverware success at Santiago Bernabeu this term, helping the club to glory in La Liga and the Champions League.

However, talk has persisted that he could be set to depart the club, with United one mooted suitor - and Asensio has admitted he will hold crunch talks when he returns after the international break.

What has Asensio said about his Real Madrid future?

"I have one year left on my contract," Asensio addressed reporters when asked about his next steps during international duty with Spain. "Now, I am focused on the national team.

"When this is over, we will talk. We will see what I will do with my future. I think there are possibilities. There is also the option to stay and fulfill my contract year.

"Rumors are part of football, and more so at Real Madrid. High-level players are always associated with it. It's something we have to live with."

GOAL can confirm that Madrid are eager to tie Asensio down to fresh terms, but if an agreement cannot be reached, they will look to cash in before the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

The Liga champions want to avoid losing the 26-year-old on a free transfer next summer, with a formal meeting on his future set to take place after the international break.

Asensio would prefer to remain with the Blancos but wants assurances over playing time, otherwise he will consider moving on or simply running his current deal down.

Will Man Utd try to sign Asensio?

With a new man at the helm in the shape of former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, United are looking to overhaul their squad this summer with a raft of new signings.

It remains to be seen whether or not they are able to convince Frenkie de Jong to part with Barcelona, but the Red Devils have a broad list of targets.

Asensio is reportedly one such figure, although it's unclear at this stage if the Red Devils' interest is concrete and whether they will actively try to sign the winger in the summer transfer window.
