Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has left the Croatia squad after picking up an injury.

Goal understands that the 25-year-old will be assessed once he returns to Anfield, though club and country had been in contact before Lovren withdrew from Niko Kovac’s party, who take on Croatia and Azerbaijan on Friday and Monday, respectively.

The former Southampton centre-back has had a mixed start to the season since his £20 million transfer from St Mary’s Stadium.

The Reds are in ninth place in the Premier League, having taken 10 points from their first seven games.

Brendan Rodgers is already without Mamadou Sakho so, should Lovren’s injury keep him out of matches after the international break, Kolo Toure could come into the side alongside Martin Skrtel against QPR.
