Of course, this is the second final that Athletic have found themselves in this year. In a weird quirk of fate, they and Sociedad both competed for the Supercopa de Espana on the basis of reaching this very final before they had even played it. Marcelino's men emerged, against the odds, as winners back in January, seeing off Real Madrid in the semi-final before shocking Barcelona with an extra-time victory in the final. It means that they will face the Blaugrana for a second time in a showpiece game this term. This, assuredly, was no warm-up game - but at the very least, Athletic will be able to take pointers from the crushing hurt of their loss here today and hopefully bounce back when they square up with Ronald Koeman's side in the near-future.

Bilbao set for second shot

It is cruel - so cruel - that there is nobody here to see this moment, this historic twist in the legends of Spanish football. The first Basque derby final, played behind closed doors thanks to a once-in-a-generation pandemic, already shelved a year in the hopes of welcoming fans. But Sociedad supporters will be going absolutely crackers right now. They may not be there to see it in the flesh - but just because they weren't doesn't mean that it didn't happen. The Basque country is blue and white tonight. Spare a thought for Athletic Club. They have to do this all over again in a fortnight, against Barcelona. The glass half-full approach is to say that they have an immediate chance for redemption. The glass half-empty tack? Well, that is too painful to even think about right now.

Mikel Oyarzabal's name will be written into Basque folklore - Real Sociedad are the 2020 Copa del Rey winners! The Spain international's penalty, following a prolonged period of VAR-assisted indecision, is what splits the difference as the final whistle goes. Sociedad players mob each other in jubilation. With all but one of the Premier League's five remaining sides in continental competition playing today - Manchester United are the lone exception - it is to their midweek encounters that Liverpool and Arsenal will now turn. The Reds have a thorny score to settle with Real Madrid in the Champions League, though Mohamed Salah will not get the reunion with Sergio Ramos he might crave after the latter was inured earlier this week. The Gunners though take aim at&nbsp;Slavia Prague in the Europa League, looking to keep their fledgling hopes of a second successive season with silverware alive following a tough campaign.

Teams turn attention to Europe

Diogo Jota will be the cheeriest fellow in north London this evening - and really, can you blame him? - and he remains convinced that the elusive top-four finish remains firmly within the Reds' grasp in his post-match comments to Sky Sports. "I think to think about higher spots in the table, we have to do our job which is to win every single one of our games until the end," he stated. "If we do our job we have a high chance to be there. It's hard to win in the Premier League but today we did our job."

Diogo Jota bags a brace from off the bench! The former Wolves man comes absolutely blazing in, rampaging down the middle of the pitch from out of noweher to practically charge Sadio Mane's loose touch inside the Arsenal box past Leno. He's got all the&nbsp;finesse of a bowling ball being dropped into the gutter but he won't care with the ball in the net. Liverpool are home and dry.

Romelu Lukaku's snatched effort just after the half-hour mark is enough - Inter have another three points to their name in Serie A! That's an eight-point lead now for Antonio Conte's side over Milan - and the&nbsp;Nerazzurri have a game in hand too. Surely a first Scudetto since 2010 beckons for the club?

As it stands - and it will likely stand in a quarter-hour or so when this game wraps up - Liverpool will be moving into fifth with this win, leapfrogging West Ham and Tottenham. David Moyes' Hammers don't play until Monday, when they face a tough test in the shape of Wolves - but&nbsp;Spurs should be odds-on favourites to retake the advantage against Newcastle on Sunday. That being said, a Magpies side with just one win since the start of February against a Jose Mourinho side with a potential eye on a looming cup final? Steve Bruce might do Jurgen Klopp an unexpected favour there.

Reds vault back into top four tussle?

Mohamed Salah doubles the Reds' lead inside four minutes! Pick this one out of the photo album marked Liverpool's Greatest Hits 2017-2020 - it's a fast-moving, free-flowing slice of fried gold from the halcyon days of last season where the Merseyside outfit were romping all over the shop. The Egypt international brings down a long ball on the right, breaks forward, cuts around the last defender, dinks back inside and nutmegs Leno with a close-range finish. Sublime stuff.

Marcus Thuram's second-half brace is the comeback key for Borussia Monchengladbach! Marco Rose's side move back up the Bundesliga table and keep touch with the race for Europe at the expense of their visitors, whose early lead looked to have given them a keen foothold. The Frenchman's powerful double, including a wonderful second that almost constituted a solo finish, mean that it swung back the other way in the end. A great result for the hosts.

FT: Gladbach 2-1 Freiburg

Trent Alexander-Arnold, take a bow! It's Diogo Jota with an absolutely cracking header to give Liverpool the lead they've been pushing for all night, on off the bench to drive home at the left post - but the delivery from the England man, left out in the cold for the March international break, is a beauty swung in off the far flank. That will have perked Gareth Southgate's ears up. The Reds hit the front.

It's&nbsp;Imanol Alguacil's team who have seen the lion's share of the ball so far, but neither side has the edge in front of goal - the first Basque derby final, a year on from when it should have been, is a goalless affair at the break. This could yet go either way but Athletic Club - back in this very showpiece game in a few weeks - might need to pick up the pace a little bit.

Well, Alisson is having such a good time, but not too much of the ball. Remarkably, he's not even the Liverpool player with the least amount of passes in this game - that honour actually belongs to Sadio Mane, who has been kept a little bit isolate out wide for the Reds. Tierney 'worried' amid injury exit

Look away Gunners fans: Arsenal have had just one shot in the first half of a Premier League home game for the first time since November 2015, when they faced Tottenham. The hosts&nbsp;have also won just one of their last five top-flight&nbsp;home games when 0-0 at half time - beating Newcastle 3-0&nbsp;in January, to accompany two losses and two draws.

Gunners suffer limited chances

It's the last half of Serie A for the day, with Inter very much on course for another three points. But can Bologna trip them up with something here before they reach the finish line?

The Reds have had almost twice as much ball as the Gunners, and have notched up six shots against one - but at the interval, there's no goals for either side. Dominance from Jurgen Klopp's team, but not the goal that they would have craved. Mikel Arteta may be content to see that his side have weathered the storm so far, but the loss of Kieran Tierney is a major blow.

That was as cool as a slice of Arctic roll and just as tasty. Gladbach lead for the first time in this match.

The Gunners have been very much on the backburner this evening but their night of being pegged back by a hungry Reds side has just got a whole lot worse. Kieran Tierney has walked off the field with the medic and headed straight down the tunnel as injury time begins in the first half. Cedric Soares has replaced him. That's a major blow for Arsenal - and if something more long-term, Scotland too, with Euro 2020 not too far on the horizon.

Reds dampening Gunners' firepower

We're back underway in the Bundesliga. Marco Rose has presumably told his side that they he does not want to see any wilting wallflowers in the second half. Gladbach will be determined to not surrender a chance of European football after growing accustomed to their Champions League excursions.

A close-range finish from Romelu Lukaku - almost a poacher's effort off his own initial attempt - means that Antonio Conte's men are firmly in the driving seat in Serie A. Roland Sallai's cracking finish in the early exchanges of the first half means that it is the visitors who have their noses in front at the interval. But Gladbach have had marginally more ball so far, and they haven't been too far from an equaliser. To use a footballing cliche, this one could go either way.

As the last few games of a busy first Saturday back from the international break continue to gather steam, there is one remarkable tie still to come. A year after it was meant to be played, the 2020 Copa del Rey Final will take place at&nbsp;Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville - as Athletic Club and Real Sociedad face off, in the first&nbsp;Basque derby final between the pair. It's a game quite literally over 12 months in the making, and comes in remarkable circumstances - so remarkable, in fact, that if&nbsp;Marcelino's side win, they'll have the chance to defend it almost immediately in a fortnight against Barcelona in the 2021 final.

City extend watertight foundations

Kevin De Bruyne - who enjoyed a typically superb game around the park for Manchester City today - got caught up in an incident in the second half involving a swinging arm. The Belgian did not respond quietly to it, and told Sky Sports after the match:&nbsp;"I thought something was a little bit serious, but football is a contact sport so that's fine." De Bruyne was caught across the face by Daniel Amartey's swinging arm, which saw the Leicester man pick up a booking. The former protested quite strongly that it should have been more, but whether that was the case is something else entirely.
