The young German is starting to thrive under Pep Guardiola after a big-money move from Schalke but his career could have gone in a different direction

Jurgen Klopp was advised to sign Leroy Sane during his time at Borussia Dortmund but missed out on the youngster, Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner has revealed.

The two worked together at the Bundesliga side before Klopp’s move to Liverpool and Wagner, whose Championship side face Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday, was a big admirer of the young German.

Sane has shaken off a slow start to life in England to become a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s new-look attack and Wagner is not surprised to see him impress in the Premier League.

“I knew him early,” he told the Manchester Evening News. “He was more of a character because of his age and it was part of my job to mention the big talents of Germany to Jurgen.

“I made him aware of him for the first team of Dortmund, but he signed for Schalke

“We should not forget how young he is. He’s still a talent and not a finished one.”

Sane opened his City account in the 2-1 win over Arsenal in December and has also scored against Tottenham and Crystal Palace, and Wagner feels there is much more to come.

“What he delivered so far is extraordinary,” he added.

“I’m a little bit surprised how consistent he’s been in recent weeks against big competition, but he has every talent, all the skills.

“I can’t speak about his character, but all the talents you need.”
