The former Nigerian topflight champions have chalked some key players off their squad after they endured an unimpressive 2016-17 campaign

Kano Pillars have released six players ahead of the 2017-18 season, with another six demoted to the junior side.

Mohammed Jiya, Musa Najare, Kabir Balogun, Saheed Mubarak and the duo of Bala Zakka and Adamu Mohammed - laid off for disciplinary issues - were asked to look for another club.

Coach of the Kano outfit, Ahmed Garba says the players affected were told to go for various reasons ranging from indiscipline and low productivity. He adds that the players demoted to the feeder team will be properly monitored with a view of restoring them back to the main side.

“We have retained 22 players and have asked six to find other clubs. We also told another six to go back to the feeder team because they have dropped in form," Garba told Goal.

"They will be examined again and will be brought back if there are significant changes. We want to improve better than we did last season.

“We dropped 10 of the 12 for low productivity while [Bala Zakka and Adamu Mohammed] were told to go because they have become bad influence on other players due to their lack of discipline," he continued.

"They are very good players that we would have retained but we can’t compromise overall team unity.

“We started training last week and we shall continue with the first phase until we notice that our players have regained match fitness. We are going to move to the next phase not long thereafter,” he concluded.

Last season, Kano Pillars finished eighth in the Nigeria Professional Football League after they garnered 54 points from 38 games.

The Muazu Babangida-led management have retained the services of the technical crew headed by Ibrahim Musa while negotiations are in progress towards securing replacements for players that are off Sai Masu Gida's books.
