Following the 53rd Malaysian FA (FAM) congress on Saturday that saw Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim capture the post of president, he wasted no time announcing several major changes to the Malaysia national team.
Earlier in the day in the congress press conference, the Crown Prince of Johor announced that he will replace Malaysia head coach Dato' Ong Kim Swee with former JDT head coach Mario Gomez.
And later that night, the Southern Tigers social media posted a photo of Tunku Ismail, who is also known as TMJ by fans, along with four JDT players.
Curiously, the four players are the same players who in July 2016 announced their retirement from the national team; Amirulhadi Zainal, Kunanlan Subramaniam, Safiq Rahim and Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak.
The caption of the photo was a short and cryptic "Welcome back."
Following Tunku Ismail's ire at the national team set-up for getting JDT players who received call-ups injured on national duty last year, the quartet announced their withdrawal from the national team in the space of one week.
Their absence led to a dismal performance by the national team in friendlies and in the 2016 AFF Cup.
However, several of them have expressed their readiness to return to the national team, especially JDT captain and former Malaysia skipper Safiq.
With Tunku Ismail's new FAM post, many have said that the quartet are likely to come out of international football retirement.
