'It's a f***ing disgrace' - How Ovrebo & 'Uefalona' crushed Hiddink's Champions League dream

Chelsea are on the brink of appointing Guus Hiddink as interim manager for a second time following Jose Mourinho's sacking on Thursday.

Hiddink's previous spell began in February 2009 as he was asked to fill the void left by Luiz Felipe Scolari, who had failed to impress in his first season as Stamford Bridge boss.

The Dutchman's three month stint is best remembered for the Blues' hugely controversial Champions League semi-final exit to Barcelona.

After a goalless draw in the first leg at Camp Nou, Chelsea went 1-0 up in the return fixture in London thanks to Michael Essien.

But Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo then turned down three valid penalty claims as the home side chased a killer second goal.

Andres Iniesta then equalised in the 93rd minute to send Barcelona into the 2008-09 Champions League final on away goals, but not before Chelsea had a fourth penalty claim rejected by Ovrebo.

This resulted in mayhem at the final whistle as Chelsea players, including Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba, surrounded the referee.

Drogba was apoplectic, infamously shouting into the pitchside camera that the official was a "f*cking disgrace". The Ivorian had to be dragged away from Ovrebo, while Hiddink described it as "the worst refereeing performance I've ever seen".

The Metropolitan Police in London were reported to have been seriously concerned for Ovrebo's safety and the Norwegian was sent death threats for years after the semi-final by Chelsea fans.

Barcelona were labelled by some critics as 'Uefalona' after the game, and went on to win the Champions League by beating Manchester United in the final. Hiddink did end his first spell as Chelsea boss on a high note by lifting the FA Cup before going to coach Turkey on a full-time basis.
