Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad after suffering a groin injury.

The 33-year-old picked up the injury during training on Wednesday and will now return to his club, the Football Association has confirmed.

Carrick will now miss the upcoming European Championship qualifier against Slovenia on Saturday evening and the friendly against Scotland the following Tuesday, with a replacement not immediately announced.

The midfielder last appeared for England in a World Cup qualifier against Poland over a year ago.
