Atsu’s Newcastle extend Championship lead as Brighton falter once again

Christian Atsu played 83 minutes in Newcastle United’s 3-1 win at Huddersfield Town on Saturday as they extended their lead on the Championship table to five points following Brighton and Hove Albion’s defeat.

The game was between first and third and the Magpies ensured they built on their midweek victory against second-placed Brighton with a composed victory.

Rafa Benitez’s side took a 10th minute lead via Matt Richie and doubled the tally courtesy of Daryl Murphy on 32 minutes.

Aaron Mooy halved the deficit for Huddersfield through the penalty spot on 72 minutes which left for a frenzied few minutes as they searched for an equalizer.

But Dwight Gayle ensured full points for Newcastle in the first minute of added-on time to make it 3-1.

It left Newcastle five points ahead of Brighton who lost 3-0 to Nottingham Forest earlier in the day.

Atsu, who is on loan from Chelsea, has played 22 times, making nine starts and three goals.
