The attacker broke the record just five minutes into Chile's Confederations Cup clash with Germany Thursday, taking his tally to 38 with his national side.

The strike pushed the Arsenal star past former Lazio striker Marcelo Salas, who netted 37 times in just 70 caps for his country, with Sanchez needing 112 matches to reach 38.

Tigres striker Eduardo Vargas, who was on the pitch as Alexis broke the record, sits tied for third with 34 goals in just 69 matches, a total good enough to have him level with former Real Madrid player Iván Zamorano.

Chile opened the Confederations Cup with a 2-0 win over Cameroon and had the chance to win Group B with a victory over Germany, but were held to a 1-1 draw and now will go into the group finale with everything to play for.
