    WHAT HAPPENED?

Weston McKennie had been linked with a move all summer, with Juventus opting not to feature the U.S. men's national team star during preseason as he looked set for an exit. The club's stance changed in recent weeks, though, with Thiago Motta admitting that McKennie could be a "useful" player this season.

GOAL confirmed on Thursday that the two sides had come together to reach an agreement on an extension that will keep McKennie locked in with Juve through 2026. Juventus confirmed the deal on Friday, cementing the American's future with the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The story feels like a familiar one, as McKennie looked set to leave Juventus last summer as well following a frustrating loan spell at Leeds. He ultimately proved his worth, though, establishing himself as a key player under Massimiliano Allegri throughout last season.

He'll now look to repeat that under Motta, who left the American on the bench for Juve's 3-0 season-opening win over Como. With a new contract in hand, though, it seems McKennie will become a key figure under Juve's new coach.

    DID YOU KNOW?

McKennie has been with Juventus since the 2020-21 season and has made 103 total appearances for the Bianconeri. During that time, he has scored eight goals while also winning three trophies during his time in Turin. Last season was McKennie's best, though, as he led Juventus with 10 assists in all competitions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR JUVENTUS?

McKennie and Juventus will be back in action on Monday for a clash against Verona, their second Serie A match of the season. McKennie, though, will also be looking ahead to USMNT duty with looming September friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.
