USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino reveals why Tyler Adams' transfer to Chelsea collapsed as he explains Bournemouth midfielder's omission from latest roster

Adams swapped Leeds United for Bournemouth in the summer of 2023 but for a time it looked like he would join Pochettino when he was in the dugout at Chelsea. The new manager of the United States men's team has said they passed at the chance to sign the American due to his injury problems and that more fitness troubles are behind his absence from the roster for this month's Nations League games against Jamaica - with the 25-year-old just returning from a back problem.

He told reporters: "We know very well we need to look after him [Adams], to have [him] in the best condition for 2026. I know very well him because I think it's public that we wanted to sign him in Chelsea. When we arrived in Chelsea, I remember that in USA, in Chicago, we had a conversation. We knew and after, the club didn't sign him because he was injured. That is why, in the end, we cannot but we already know and we know how important but we need to provide the good platform for him to get [to] his best."

Adams has barely kicked a ball in the past 18 months or so, making just seven appearances in all competitions for Bournemouth to date. A string of injuries has restricted his playing time, so easing him back in may be the right move for the ex-RB Leipzig man.

Adams will likely be watching on from afar when the USA take on Jamaica in a double-headed tie on November 15 and November 19 respectively. Adams could feature for Bournemouth at home to Brighton on November 23.
