'Things don't work out' - Ruben Amorim reveals why he's banished Alejandro Garnacho from Man Utd squad as Chelsea continue interest in winger

Amorim has moved Garnacho to Manchester United’s so-called 'Bomb Squad', training away from the first team during pre-season training ahead of the 2025/26 season. The 21-year-old was left behind when the club travelled to the United States, with his future now all but sealed, as revealed by the former Sporting coach. 

Speaking to the media, Amorim said: "Garnacho is a really talented boy, but sometimes things don't work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is. 

“But I have the feeling that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership. And I can understand that. It's not a problem. Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge.  We try to make everything okay to all the parts, to the club, to the coach and to the players. It's a natural thing in football.”

Garnacho’s removal from the squad reflects Amorim’s desire for a unified dressing room. The Portuguese coach also talked about the 'bomb squad' and the players who don't want to stay at the club. He added: “There are players that clearly show that they don't want to be here, and that is normal. It’s not that they’re bad and I’m good, or I'm bad and they’re good.

“It's not that situation. It's a simple situation that they want new challenges. If the market closes and they are still Manchester United players, we as a club have to treat them under the same conditions. 

“But at this moment, I'm just working with the players I think are going to stay, and the other guys are trying to find a solution for their careers.”

Chelsea, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, and Napoli are among the clubs linked with Garnacho. The Argentine is expected to leave in the coming weeks, with the Blues currently leading the race for his signature. If a deal materialises, it would mark the end of a turbulent but promising stint at Old Trafford. For now, he continues to train away from the main group as negotiations advance.
