'I can put this challenging period behind me' - Sam Kerr breaks silence following not guilty verdict in racial harassment case

The Chelsea star learned the final verdict in her racial harassment trial as she was found not guilty of intentionally causing "racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress" to Metropolitan Police Officer PC Stephen Lovell in an incident in south-west London on January 30, 2023.

Kerr breathed a sigh of relief as she maintained her stance of not intentionally insulting the police officer. She thanked the jury and her loved ones, including fiancee Kristie Mewis, who stood by the Australian footballer throughout her trial process.

An official statement from the Blues forward read: "Following today’s not guilty verdict, I can finally put this challenging period behind me. While I apologise for expressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening, I have always maintained that I did not intend to insult or harm anyone.

"And I am thankful that the jury unanimously agreed. I would like to thank my partner Kristie, my family, friends and all the fans for their love and support, especially those who attended court each day. I am fully focused on getting back on to the pitch and look forward to an exciting year ahead for me and my family."

The 31-year-old Matildas star has remained sidelined since January 2024 due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The player is expected to resume training by the end of February or early March. Chelsea will be next seen in action on Sunday as they face Everton in the Women's Super League.
