    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rudiger's eventful game saw him score at both ends. He scored the equaliser for Real Madrid with a header in the 20th minute after Atletico's Mario Hermoso drew first blood. However, a misunderstanding with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga saw him chip the ball into his own net after the Chelsea loanee failed to judge the flight of a cross with Morata leaping with Rudiger for a potential header. However, Dani Carvajal saved his blushes with an 85th-minute equaliser while Joselu Mato and Brahim Diaz scored twice in extra time to propel the La Liga leaders to the Super Cup final.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Interestingly, Rudiger had been on the receiving end of a similar act in 2021 when then Atletico Madrid star Luis Suarez pinched Rudiger's thigh during a Champions League match. He was furious with the Uruguayan and the duo had to be separated by the other players on the pitch.
