MLS Power Rankings: Chucky Lozano's San Diego FC make Supporters' Shield surge, while the slide continues for Atlanta United

It's been a busy month for Major League Soccer, with three teams representing at the FIFA Club World Cup and other clubs returning from the Gold Cup break with a double matchweek. MLS players were back on the pitch after a near 10-day layoff, and there's a shakeup in the table across both conferences.

Philadelphia Union in the East and Vancouver Whitecaps in the West - conference leaders - had losses. In the West, San Diego FC and Minnesota United both had fantastic weeks and are putting pressure on the Canadian club. In the East, things are getting feisty. Just three points separate the first-place Union and fourth-place Crew, while both FC Cincinnati and Nashville SC sit between them.

Meanwhile, surprise strugglers LA Galaxy, Charlotte FC, Atlanta United, and Real Salt Lake are all still trying to find their identity as they look for a late-season surge

Who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest 2025 MLS Power Rankings.

Note: Previous rankings update: June 16.

  • San Jose Earthquakes v LA GalaxyGetty Images Sport

    30Los Angeles Galaxy

    Prior Ranking: 29

Results: Lost to Colorado 2-0, drew San Jose 1-1

Ramifications: With just one win this season, the Galaxy seem to be a team without life. They appeared the better side against San Jose in the Cali Clasico, but managed just one point out of it.

Not much to take from that.

  • 29St. Louis CITY SC

    Prior Ranking: 28

Result: Lost to Orlando 4-2, lost to Houston 1-0

Ramifications: So poor. Things went from bad to worse for CITY this week, and with it, they sit 11 points out of a playoff spot with 14 games to spare. Interim coach David Critchley is just looking to prepare for 2026, as the campaign increasingly appears to be a wash.

  • 28D.C. United

    Prior Ranking: 25

Result: DNP MD20, lost to Nashville 1-0

Ramifications: Another week and another loss for D.C. in a game in which they very much could have walked away with at least a point. With just one win in their last nine, and 10 goals conceded in their last three matches combined, D.C. continue to underperform.

  • 27CF Montreal

    Prior Ranking: 30

Results: Lost to FCC 3-1, defeated NYCFC 1-0

Ramifications: Midweek, they fell victim to a masterful performance from Evander, but they rebounded with a top showing against NYCFC. Their second win of the month, it was just their third victory of the season, but they won't care - it was a welcome development for both players and fans.

  • Toronto FC 2025Imagn

    26Toronto FC

    Prior Ranking: 27

Result: Drew RBNY 1-1, defeated Portland 3-0

Ramifications: Where in the world did this come from? Robin Fraser will be thrilled with a four-point week, and for the first time since early April, TFC secured two positive results, back-to-back.

Theo Corbeanu bagged the goal that secured them a point against RBNY, and somehow, TFC returned on Saturday to wallop Portland. It came out of nowhere, but they will surely take it, as they secured just their fourth win of the campaign.

  • 25Atlanta United

    Prior Ranking: 26

Result: Lost to Columbus 3-1, DNP MD21

Ramifications: Three straight losses, one total goal scored. It's bleak in Atlanta right now. The fact that they even found the back of the net against Columbus was a shock, based on their performance midweek. A woefully bad season continues, and news that midfielder Jay Fortune broke his foot while on international duty with Trinidad and Tobago only adds to it.

  • 24FC Dallas

    Prior Ranking: 23

Result: Lost to San Jose 4-2, lost to San Diego 3-2

Ramifications: Ouch. A really poor week for Eric Quill on the touchline. Two losses to Western Conference opponents in the same week at home has to sting. With just one win in their last 13 regular-season games, FCD is on a downward spiral.

Completely outclassed by SJ midweek, they returned at the weekend looking to get a result against a red-hot SDFC side. All appeared to be on track until they fell apart late in the match. They conceded two late goals and dropped the result, a theme all too familiar of late. Sitting 11th in the West, they need a big second half if they want to compete for a playoff spot.

  • 23Sporting Kansas City

    Prior Ranking: 24

Result: Defeated Charlotte 2-1, drew RSL 1-1

Ramifications: Overall, a really positive week for Sporting, who are starting to figure things out in the post-Peter Vermes era. Two late goals from Mason Toye and Dejan Joveljic, with both finding the back of the net in stoppage time, saw them secure three points and a massive result midweek.

They followed it up with a point against RSL, and after conceding the opener, rebounded to earn a point. Not the best of results, but they'll take a four-point week

  • 22Real Salt Lake

    Prior Ranking: 21

Result: DNP MD20, drew SKC 1-1

Ramifications: No Diego Luna - playing for the USMNT in the Gold Cup - meant Johnny Russell had more on his plate, and he served up a great goal against his former club as RSL earned a point against Sporting. Considering RSL went ahead early, they might be frustrated to not have earned a win on the road.

  • Brandon Vazquez Austin FCImagn

    21Austin FC

    Prior Ranking: 17

Result: DNP MD20, lost to Seattle 2-0

Ramifications: One of their worst losses this season. Seattle, down multiple center-backs, deployed a fullback centrally, and Austin still couldn't break through. Nico Estevez has helped them turn into a defensively sound squad, but Verde have been abysmal in the final third all year. They have just 15 goals scored across 20 matches.

  • 20Colorado Rapids

    Prior Ranking: 20

Result: Defeated LA Galaxy 2-0, drew New England 3-3

Ramifications: A good week for Colorado, for the most part. They dominated the Galaxy at home on Wednesday, with goals from Djordje Mihailovic and Calvin Harris securing them three points, and then earned a point on the road against the Revolution.

Chris Armas won't be thrilled that things ended with a draw against the Revs, considering they had a two-goal lead with five minutes to spare in regulation, but a four-point week is never a bad performance. Solid showing for the Rapids.

  • 19New England Revolution

    Prior Ranking: 14

Result: Lost 3-2 to Nashville SC, drew Colorado 3-3

Ramifications: Losing to Nashville, by all accounts, is not a bad result. They're the surprise team of the Eastern Conference this year and are playing some really incredible soccer under B.J. Callaghan. However, New England cannot afford to be conceding three goals to a struggling Colorado side.

In an extremely competitive Eastern Conference, that's a bad draw and two points dropped for Caleb Porter and his team. Two late goals secured the Revs a point, but overall, just not good enough for a team with playoff aspirations.

  • 18Houston Dynamo

    Prior Ranking: 18

Result: Lost to MNUFC 3-1, defeated St. Louis 1-0

Ramifications: Defeated handily by MNUFC midweek, it was a good rebound performance from the Dynamo against a struggling CITY side. It was a heroic sendoff match for MLS legend Nico Lodeiro, who played his last game for Houston and MLS as they earned all three points. Going out on a win for the Uruguayan felt like a fitting goodbye.

  • 17Charlotte FC

    Prior Ranking: 16

Result: Lost 2-1 to SKC, lost 3-2 to Chicago Fire

Ramifications: Just uninspiring from Charlotte of late. Three straight losses to Eastern Conference opponents, and very little is going well for them in the final-third right now. Sure, they're without Tim Ream and Patrick Agyemang due to Gold Cup duty, but that's not a real excuse for a squad with this much talent.

Wilfried Zaha has just one goal in his last seven matches, but to be fair to him, he did bag an assist against SKC and Chicago, so he's playing a role. But Charlotte need more from him in front of the net.

  • Chicago Fire FC v Philadelphia UnionGetty Images Sport

    16Chicago Fire

    Prior Ranking: 19

Result: Lost to Philadelphia 1-0, defeated Charlotte 3-2

Ramifications: A tough loss for Chicago against Philly in a game in which they could have at least earned a point. They rebounded at the weekend to top Charlotte in a five-goal thriller, three three strikes in 10 minutes.

Gregg Berhalter should be thrilled with the result, considering that's three points in five days against two Eastern Conference playoff contenders. For the Fire, it puts them in eighth in the East - they're right in the thick of that competitive playoff race.

  • 15New York Red Bulls

    Prior Ranking: 15

Result: Drew Toronto 1-1, drew MNUFC 2-2

Ramifications: A tough stretch for RBNY. Against TFC, Star forward Lewis Morgan, defender Raheem Edwards, and forward Wiktor Bogacz all exited with injuries as they walked away with just a point. Manager Sandro Schwarz sounded off on MLS' scheduling after the result.

“I’d love to speak to the guy who is responsible for that rule,” Schwarz said. “Everyone knows that you need good preparation. The rule - five-day break off and then directly start five days later, it’s not possible [to prepare correctly]. For me, it’s a new experience, for everyone it’s a new experience and I think that it’s not the best idea, to be honest.”

Against MNUFC, the Red Bulls earned a point courtesy of a 90th-minute equalizer from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, but dropped points in front of their own fans. A frustrated Schwarz stormed the pitch towards the referee and was handed a red card.

RBNY is now down their coach and a handful of players when they return to the pitch.

  • 14San Jose Earthquakes

    Prior Ranking: 22

Result: Defeated FC Dallas 4-2, drew LA Galaxy 1-1

Ramifications: A really good four-point week for Bruce Arena's squad.

A dominant performance against FCD included four different scorers, while in the second edition of the Cali Clasico this season, they earned a point against the Galaxy at Stanford Stadium - with an attendance of 42,881, making it the fifth-largest crowd in MLS this season.

Up to sixth in the West, San Jose has been sneaky good of late, and they're starting to now catch the eyes of all in the conference.

  • 13Portland Timbers

    Prior Ranking: 13

Result: DNP MD20, lost 3-0 to Toronto FC

Ramifications: Woof. Poor performance from Portland in both defense and attack. They were missing both Antony and Jonathan Rodriguez to injury, but frankly, that is no excuse. Just a bad loss.

  • 12New York City FC

    Prior Ranking: 9

Result: DNP MD20, lost 1-0 to CF MTL

Ramifications: Really bad loss. Down a few starters due to the Gold Cup, they gifted CF MTL just their third victory of the season. There's no point in covering it up - this was nowhere near good enough from NYCFC.

  • Orlando City v FC CincinnatiGetty Images Sport

    11Orlando City

    Prior Ranking: 8

Result: Defeated St. Louis 4-2, lost to FC Cincy 2-1

Ramifications: As expected, a dominant win over a CITY side that is really struggling, putting four past them on the road to take three points. Notably, they surpassed their xG of 2.5 by some margin, as their attack put on a clinical showing.

Against FCC, they were the latest victim of Evander, well, being Evander. He scored an emphatic brace, including a world-class free kick to stun the Lions at home. Not much they could do there, and no reason to put their heads down. Still fifth in the East, Orlando is closing in on a top-four spot.

  • 10Los Angeles FC

    Prior Ranking: 12

Result: DNP MD20, lost to Vancouver 1-0

Ramifications: A tough return from the Club World Cup. In Olivier Giroud's final game for LAFC, they fell short and couldn't get a result at home in front of their fans. The positive spin is that they now have a DP spot open, courtesy of the Frenchman's departure.

  • 9Inter Miami

    Prior Ranking: 6

    Result: Did not play.

Ramifications: Featured at the Club World Cup, losing to PSG 4-0 Sunday to exit the tournament.

  • 8Columbus Crew

    Prior Ranking: 7

Result: Defeated Atlanta 3-1, Defeated Philadelphia 1-0

Ramifications: Two big results to get Columbus back on track after a tough stretch of form in May. A dominant performance against Atlanta saw them take three points at home before turning to hosting the league leaders on Sunday.

Columbus held Philly to just six shots, albeit against a heavily rotated roster. Still, the Crew are within touching distance of Philly now, trailing them by just two points in the East.

  • 7Seattle Sounders

    Prior Ranking: 10

Result: DNP MD20, defeated Austin FC 2-0

Ramifications: Upon return from the CWC, Seattle completely outclassed Austin. Down a central defender, Alex Roldan even played center-back and managed to keep a clean sheet. Just a terrific result for Brian Schmetzer's men after being bounced from the CWC in the group stage.

  • 6Minnesota United

    Prior Ranking: 4

Result: Defeated Houston Dynamo 3-1, drew RBNY 2-2

Ramifications: A really good midweek result for the Loons, who are also one of the shorthanded squads due to the Gold Cup. Winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane had a day to remember against the Dynamo, scoring a brace and celebrating with family who arrived from South Africa to see him play in person.

Then, a solid road point against a tough RBNY side - however, it will still seem points dropped for the Loons after they conceded a 90th-minute equalizer to Choupo-Moting.

  • 5Nashville SC

    Prior Ranking: 5

Result: Defeated New England 3-2, defeated D.C. United 1-0

Ramifications: Two words: Sam Surridge. The Englishman scored a midweek hat-trick to secure three points agains the Revolution, and then scored a game-winning penalty kick to earn the result against D.C. United. He has 16 goals, three more than any other player in the league.

  • 4FC Cincinnati

    Prior Ranking: 11

Result: Defeated CF MTL 3-1, defeated Orlando 2-1

Ramifications: Evander, Evander, Evander. The Brazilian scored a brace against Montreal to secure three points and then - you guessed it - another brace against Orlando to secure victory on the road against. A huge six-point stretch for FCC, and it's all thanks to their brilliant midfielder. They are now second in the East, trailing Philly by just one point.

  • 3Philadelphia Union

    Prior Ranking: 2

Result: Defeated Chicago Fire 1-0, lost to Columbus Crew 1-0

Ramifications: Big win over the Fire. It wasn't a flashy result by any means, but an early penalty kick from Bruno Damiani secured them three points. Then, a weekend defeat to the Crew was disappointing, but by no means should it be an alarm bell.

Shorthanded, Bradley Carnell deployed an XI with multiple players out of position, and even brought on 15-year-old Cavan Sullivan at halftime to try and get a result. It was a tough loss, but by no means was it a bad one.

  • 2San Diego FC

    Prior Ranking: 3

Result: Defeated Vancouver 5-3, defeated FC Dallas 3-2

Ramifications: SDFC is the most feared team in MLS right now. Striker Milan Iloski bagged four goals against the Whitecaps midweek, and then against FCD, they came from down 2-1 to score two unanswered late to secure three points. Chucky Lozano scored the equalizer in the 77th minute before Tomas Angel scored the winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

    They're on an incredible run.

  • Los Angeles Football Club v Vancouver Whitecaps FCGetty Images Sport

    1Vancouver Whitecaps

    Prior Ranking: 1

Result: Lost to SDFC 5-3, Defeated LAFC 1-0

Ramifications: Midweek was Vancouver's first real wake-up call. They conceded three goals in nine minutes on the brink of halftime, then another just two minutes into the second half - it was a real character test for them, and ultimately, they failed.

However, it is worth noting how shorthanded they were due to the Gold Cup and the recent injury losses of Ali Ahmed and Sam Adekugbe. To make matters worse, in their victory over LAFC Sunday, they lost Andres Cubas to injury, adding to the pile.

Still, what a resilient performance against the Black and Gold after Wednesday's defeat. It showed they're still one of the most difficult clubs to play.
