Man City Player of the Season 2023-24 power rankings: Phil Foden leaves Erling Haaland, Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne in his wake after superb individual campaign

English football has never quite seen a team like Manchester City. That will be factually true if Pep Guardiola's side go on to win a record fourth consecutive Premier League title. And despite the magnitude of that achievement, many pundits and observers predicted it at the start of the season and throughout it.

This has been a remarkably competitive title contest, which was a three-horse race until Liverpool dropped out of the running in late April, but there was always the sense that City were going to win it. And that is down to their insatiable winning mentality which Pep Guardiola has fostered, as well as their insanely-talented squad.

City have needed that squad this season, too, with key players Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland among those who have missed chunks of the campaign through injury. The race for the club's Player of the Season award, then, promises to be a close run thing.

GOAL has rated and ranked every Man City player's performance from another incredible campaign, as Guardiola's side prepare for yet another title party...

  • Sergio Gomez Man City 2023-24Getty

    21Sergio Gomez (3/10) ↔️

The Spaniard had a difficult first season with City and was one of few negatives in their treble-winning campaign. He hasn't improved much in his second season, either, and has looked on a lower level to the rest of his team-mates.

An assist for Haaland against Fulham has been his only notable contribution of a campaign in which he has failed to start a single Premier League game and made just a handful of substitutes' appearances. He will be lucky to still be a part of the squad next season.

  • Matheus Nunes Manchester City 2023-24Getty

    20Matheus Nunes (4/10) ⬇️

The Portuguese was a bit of a surprise signing for City after an underwhelming season with Wolves, but Guardiola has long been a fan, even if he has since admitted he was exaggerating a bit when he called him "one of the best players in the world".

Nunes has featured very little considering his £53m ($66m) transfer fee, starting just 13 games in all competitions. He has not looked out of place when he has played, but he will need to improve considerably to avoid being seen as another Kalvin Phillips.

  • Stefano Ortega Man City 2023-24Getty Images

    19Stefan Ortega (5/10) ⬆️

Ortega has remained second-choice behind Ederson, but the Brazilian's injury in March gave him a few moments in the spotlight, which he coped with well. He has often looked to be a better shot-stopper than his team-mate, although his kicking is not as smooth as that of City's No.1.

The German will start the FA Cup final and will then have to decide whether or not to continue as a back-up at City or go elsewhere in search of regular football.

  • Rico Lewis Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images

    18Rico Lewis (5/10) ⬇️

Despite repeatedly raving about the teenager, Guardiola still seems wary of playing Lewis too often, handing him only eight Premier League starts, fewer than in his breakthrough campaign.

The versatile midfielder has continued to impress when called upon and he has the patience to work his way into the team slowly but surely. Which is just as well, because he might have expected to have gotten more opportunities.

  • John Stones Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images

    17John Stones (5/10) ⬇️

The 'Barnsley Beckenbauer' missed the first two months of the season with an injury sustained in the Community Shield and then made a strong return, impressing against Brighton and particularly against Manchester United.

So it was terrible timing when he picked up another muscle injury against Young Boys, ruling him out of crucial fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. His miserable luck with injuries continued when he hurt his ankle on his return to action against Everton, while further setbacks have limited him to just 12 Premier League starts.

After being such a crucial part of the treble-winning season, 2023-24 feels a step back, even though it is not his fault.

  • Ederson Man City 2023-24Getty

    16Ederson (5/10) ⬆️

The Brazilian did more of note with his feet than his hands this season, and questions about his ability to keep the ball out of the net have persisted, albeit without damaging his reputation too much due to the fact City have continued to win.

His ability with the ball at his feet means Ederson's place in the team is assured for next season, but City will want to start planning for a future without him relatively soon as he turns 31 at the start of next season and his reflexes are not getting any sharper.

  • Jack Grealish Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images

    15Jack Grealish (5/10) ⬆️

Grealish looked a little flat at the start to the season, before then injuring his knee at Sheffield United, which forced him to miss the next month of action. He was rusty when returning and was left out of the team to face Arsenal, which felt like a snub, while Jeremy Doku's vibrant performances left his fixed starting berth in a precarious position.

It summed up Grealish's misfortune that when he was given the nod against Copenhagen, he ended up pulling a muscle. He has recovered some pride with strong displays in the run-in, but has still had a small role in City's success, summed up by his return of three goals and three assists, especially compared to last season.

He might want to consider moving away in order to be at the fulcrum of a new project rather than on the fringes.

  • Mateo Kovacic Man City 2023-24Getty

    14Mateo Kovacic (6/10) ⬇️

Kovacic adapted quickly after joining from Chelsea and in a short space of time it looked as if he has been at the club for many years. Injuries and the sheer competition in midfield meant he had to be patient, but he has grown in importance in the final phase of the season, giving City even more control in possession and helping them pull off their ruthless run of form in the title run-in.

  • Oscar Bobb celebrates Manchester City Red Star Belgrade 2023-24 Champions LeagueGetty

    13Oscar Bobb (6/10) ⬇️

The teenager made a big impression during and after City's pre-season tour, and is one of very few academy graduates to remain in the first-team squad. The Norwegian has had to be patient, but he has made the most of his few opportunities, chipping in with two goals and an assist.

He scored his first senior goal for City away to Red Star Belgrade in December and then got the winner at Newcastle with a nerveless finish. He will remain at the club over the summer and will be looking to make further in-roads towards regular football next season.

  • Ruben Dias Man City 2023-24Getty

    12Ruben Dias (6/10) ⬇️

The Portuguese had a little wobble in November and was one of the scapegoats for City's rare run of poor results and their leaky defence. It has been far from a flawless campaign by his usual standards, and small injury setbacks have not helped, but he has regained his authority at the crucial stage.

  • Jeremy Doku Manchester City 2023-24Getty Images

    11Jeremy Doku (6/10) ⬇️

The Belgian had electric start to life with City, captivating Blues and Premier League observers alike while usurping Grealish as Guardiola's favoured left winger for much of the campaign. He then fell out of favour for a short period and registered zero goal contributions for nearly three months, but he has proved to be an excellent substitute in the final months of the season.

  • Nathan Ake Man CityGetty

    10Nathan Ake (6/10) ⬇️

Guardiola singled former Bournemouth centre-back Ake out for praise at the end of last season for his no-nonsense approach to defending, only to give him a reduced role in the team after the arrival of Josko Gvardiol.

Ake has proved ultra reliable when called upon in his 30 starts in all competitions, be it at left-back or centre-back. He has also chipped in with three assists and three goals, including the strike which ended City's ludicrously long wait to score and win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

  • Manuel Akanji Man City 2023-24Getty

    9Manuel Akanji (7/10) ⬇️

The Switzerland international was one of the most underrated signings of last season in Europe, arriving for just £15m ($18m) and adapted to Guardiola's system in no time at all while also proving adept in various positions.

Akanji has picked up where he left off, anticipating danger in good time and seamlessly bringing the ball into midfield, ensuring City have numerical superiority and can dictate the pace of games. In some matches, he has struggled to perform the hybrid role as well as Stones, but the fact City have kept winning despite missing the England defender for so long also shows Akanji has been doing a pretty good job. His four goals haven't hurt, either.

  • Julian Alvarez Man City 2023-24Getty

    8Julian Alvarez (7/10) ⬇️

It felt strange for a World Cup-winning striker to play as little as Alvarez did last season, but the Argentine locked down his place in the team early in the campaign, starting every every league game until mid-February.

Since De Bruyne has returned to his old self, Alvarez has had to be more patient, yet he has been even more clinical than last year, scoring 17 goals while setting up a further 11. Only Phil Foden and Haaland have contributed more. And to think, City paid just £14m ($17.4) for him.

  • Bernardo Silva Man City 2023-24Getty

    7Bernardo Silva (7/10) ↔️

Bernardo's attempt to leave City for either Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona was one of the storylines of the summer until he signed a new three-year contract, although injuries have held him back at times. He was at his twisting, gliding best when fit, however, giving standout displays in the drubbing of United in October and in the FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle.

Eleven goals and seven assists is what we have come to expect from the Portuguese magician, while he also showed his personality by bagging the winner against Chelsea just three days after missing in the penalty shootout against Real Madrid. The only negative is that City will be bracing themselves for another summer of uncertainty over his future.

  • Kevin De Bruyne Man CityGetty

    6Kevin De Bruyne (7/10) ⬆️

The Belgian had a nightmare start to the season when he tore his hamstring 20 minutes into the opening game at Burnley, ruling him out for five months. He quickly got back in the swing of things, though, setting up a goal within just 17 minutes of his return against Huddersfield Town.

De Bruyne has barely slowed down since, scoring six goals while setting up another 16. He has more assists in all competitions than any other Premier League player, despite missing half the season. City will be hoping he prolongs his stay and they can keep counting on his unerring ability to create danger from nothing.

  • Josko GvardiolGetty

    5Josko Gvardiol (8/10) ⬆️

The Croatian arrived from RB Leipzig with inevitably high expectations due to his £77m ($93m) transfer fee and took a little bit longer than might have been expected to settle into the team. But little by little, Gvariol has embraced his new role as a left-back, and since April he has been in incredible form, scoring five goals in seven games after failing to net in his previous 32.

Guardiola hailed him as "the best winger on the planet" after his brace at Fulham, but then also urged him to defend better. It was a reminder that Guardiola is rarely satisfied, but converting Gvardiol from centre-back to left-back has proved to be another of the genius coach's masterplans.

  • Kyle Walker Man CityGetty

    4Kyle Walker (8/10) ↔️

Has built on his excellent finish to last season, when he proved Guardiola wrong following stinging criticism and played a pivotal role in City's run to the treble. Walker had become such an influential figure that his team-mates demanded that he could not leave for Bayern Munich in the summer, and he signed a new contract instead.

He has become even more important this season, stepping up as captain and showing leadership in defence and attack. Players often start to decline at the age of 33, but Walker now looks like the complete footballer and in peak physical shape. He has also maintained his performance levels despite a tumultuous private life.

  • Erling-Haaland(C)GettyImages

    3Erling Haaland (8/10) ↔️

How could Haaland follow up his first record-breaking season in England? By scoring with his first touch of the new campaign, obviously. Haaland's fourth-minute strike at Burnley showed he was in no mood for slowing down, but despite his ferocious goal rate, Haaland has not been immune from criticism, and there is a consensus that he has been poor in the biggest matches of the season, drawing blanks against Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Yet, despite missing two months with a stress fracture in his foot, he is set to finish as the top scorer in the Premier League yet again. Haaland might not not have been as deadly as in his debut campaign, but most strikers in the game would kill for the numbers he has produced this season, 25 league goals among 36 in all competitions and counting.

  • Rodri Man City 2023-24Getty Images

    2Rodri (9/10) ↔️

The hero of Istanbul has only grown more influential since the Champions League final. He has dominated practically every game he has played, acting as an indomitable force in front of the defence as well as fuelling the attack with incisive balls from deep, not to mention directly contributing to 20 goals.

Rodri's true importance to the team was underlined during his absence while suspended early in the season. City lost all four games without him, but as soon as he returned, they started winning again. With Rodri on the pitch, City are unbeaten in every competition in 15 months (discounting the shootout defeat to Real Madrid).

  • Phil Foden Manchester City 2023-24Getty

    1Phil Foden (9/10) ↔️

Foden was in a strange position last season, watching mostly from the sidelines as City conquered all before them. He had his moments, including a superb performance from the bench in the Champions League final, but it was clear he needed to have a bigger role.

He has been given that this season and has fully seized the opportunity, at first thriving in a deeper midfield position due to De Bruyne's long absence. There he was able to dictate City's play while still getting forward and having a decisive role in attack. Indeed, Foden was so good that City barely noticed the absence the Belgian.

Yet since De Bruyne's return, Foden has been even better, scoring 16 goals while setting up three in 2024 alone. He bagged hat-tricks against Brentford and Aston Villa while he stole the show in the derby win over United in March.

He has scored 25 goals in all competitions and provided 11 assists, leading to him deservedly winning the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year prize, with more individual accolades likely to follow.
