  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 18-year-old forward, making her full debut, showcased her potential by finding the back of the net in a 2-0 win that solidified City’s position at the top of Group D in the Women’s Champions League. Murphy’s goal, combined with another from Kerstin Casparij, kept City’s perfect record intact this season and placed them three points ahead of defending champions Barcelona.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Murphy’s full debut came under unexpected circumstances as City star Khadija Shaw was sidelined during the warm-up due to a knock. Stepping into the spotlight, Murphy made the most of her chance, delivering a standout performance on the left flank and made no mistake in slotting the ball home when Japanese winger Aoba Fujino found her with a perfectly weighted cross to the back post.

  • WHAT MURPHY SAID

A lifelong City supporter, Murphy was ecstatic after scoring her debut goal and told TNT Sports: "It’s a surreal feeling. This is a moment you dream of, and to do it on this stage is so special. Scoring for my childhood club makes it even more meaningful. We grew into the game, stayed determined, and showed that we want to win every match by being ruthless on the pitch.”

Murphy’s performance further cemented her place as one of Manchester City’s brightest young talents. Earlier this month, she and teammate Codie Thomas signed their first professional contracts with the club, signalling City’s commitment to nurturing their youth players. The forward made her senior debut earlier this year during City’s 3-0 triumph over Paris FC in the Women’s Champions League qualifiers. She later appeared as a substitute in their commanding 4-0 win against Tottenham in the Women’s Super League (WSL) at the Etihad Stadium in November.
