Lee Carsley told he must 'upset a few fantastic players' to make England successful as interim boss faces selection headache with Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and host of in-form attackers fighting to start against Greece

The England interim manager must juggle a host of in-form attackers, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish among the names fighting for a spot in the starting XI.

Carsley has been told to embrace the "beauty" of having to disappoint one or two important figures as ex-England striker Shearer insisted the success of the national team is the biggest priority.

"It's never a problem having too many good players, it's only a problem when you haven't got enough of them," he told Betfair. "The current England job is exactly what you would want as a manager or a coach with the players available. Lee Carsley has got Saka, Foden, Bellingham, Palmer, Grealish and [Anthony] Gordon to name a few, and I don't care who he chooses to play, so long as England go out, be successful and win games.

"If he has to leave out and upset one or two players then so be it, but that's the beauty of this current England job, you're going to have to upset a few because you’ve so many fantastic players. Foden won the Player of the Season last year and rightly so, but has hardly played so far this season, whereas Palmer has started like a train. Bukayo Saka has been ridiculously good, too. Jude Bellingham had an injury but is coming back so the talent there is unbelievable, and they'd walk into most teams. We're lucky they're English."

Carsley oversees his third game since stepping in as interim coach when England take on Greece in the Nations League on Thursday. They will then face Finland on Sunday.
