Arsenal took command of their Champions League quarter-final against the defending champions with a thumping victory at the Emirates on Tuesday. Much of the pre-match talk was about how the Gunners were going to handle the prolific Mbappe, especially without first-choice centre-back Gabriel. But backup option Kiwior more than held his own against the Frenchman, something Arsenal supporters were quick to point out on social media.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

@rwtactico2 wrote on X: "Jakub “one of the worst big 6 players of all time” Kiwior just locked up Mbappe."

@LeGrove tweeted: "Mbappe shifted sides to menace Kiwior at the start of the evening... he gave up. Biggest compliment I can give to back-up centre back is I haven't had to think about him all evening."

@AFTVMedia commented: "Kylian Mbappe, Welcome to the Jakub Kiwior penitentiary."

@AlexBatt posted: "The 8th of April, 2025. The night Kiwior absolutely silenced and pocketed Vinicius Jr, Bellingham, and Mbappe."

And @tmane54 added: "Let the world know Jakob Kiwior silenced Kylian Mbappe."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal are in a very strong position to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2009. Declan Rice's stunning free-kick double and Mikel Merino's crisp finish mean Madrid need a crushing victory in Spain to have any chance of retaining their title.
