    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mainoo only signed a new contract with United until 2027 a year ago, but that came when he had played just 77 minutes of senior football and his standing has already changed massively since then. It also follows the club's recent pattern of rewarding superstar youngsters who make the step up, as has previously been seen in the deals handed to Mason Greenwood and Alejandro Garnacho as teenagers. The latter signed a new five-year deal with United last April, before he had even completed his first full season as a first-team player.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Mainoo was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester and has represented England in several junior age groups, but he also remains eligible for Ghana and the west African country's FA want to persuade him to switch international allegiance.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAINOO?

For the level-headed Mainoo, the next few months are just about continuing to do what he has done over recent weeks. The 18-year-old has started eight consecutive games in all competitions and upcoming fixtures against West Ham, Aston Villa, Luton, Fulham and an FA Cup clash with either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest will give him the chance to keep proving himself, all before the end of February.
