  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Veiga has swapped Stamford Bridge for the Juventus Stadium and will be hoping for more regular game time after making just one Premier League start this season so far for the Blues. The 21-year-old will help strengthen a Juventus backline that has been depleted by serious injuries to centre-back Bremer and left-back Juan Cabal as well as the departure of Danilo.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Veiga will now hope to grab the opportunity handed to him by Juventus with both hands for the rest of the campaign before heading back to west London in the summer and re-joining Chelsea. According to Fabrizio Romano, Juventus will pay a €3.8m (£3.1m) loan fee, with €1.5m (£1.2m) in add-ons and €200k (£168k) in extra costs. There is no buy option in the transfer.

  • WHAT JUVENTUS SAID

A club statement read: "Juventus are delighted to welcome Portuguese defender Renato Veiga, who will join the Club on loan from Chelsea until the end of the 2024/25 season.

"A versatile and physical player, who can also play as a midfielder but has played both left-back and as a central defender in England in recent months, Veiga is gifted with great athleticism, making him a threat on set pieces and in aerial duels.

"Born and bred at Sporting CP, the 21-year-old rose through the capital club’s youth ranks, making it all the way up to the senior squad before going on to play in the Bundesliga at Augsburg in the 2022/23 season. After a year in Germany, a move to Basel followed, where he established himself as a key component of the Swiss club and attracted the attention of Premier League side Chelsea.

"Bought by the Blues last summer, Veiga made a total of 18 appearances in the first half of the season, contributing two goals and one assist, all of which came in the Conference League.

"Now, however, a new chapter in Juventus colours begins, for a player who will guarantee new alternatives and options for the Juve technical staff in the coming months.

    "Welcome to Juventus, Renato!"
