Downtrodden Jurgen Klopp explains what must happen for Liverpool to stand any chance in title race after hugely damaging Merseyside derby defeat at Everton

The Liverpool manager could not hide his disappointment after seeing his Liverpool team well beaten by the Toffees on Wednesday night. The defeat is a huge blow to the team's hopes of winning the Premier League title and leaves the Reds three points behind leaders Arsenal with just four games left to play. Manchester City will leapfrog Liverpool in the table with a win over Brighton on Thursday.

Klopp has enjoyed great success over Everton in the Merseyside derby during his career but saw his final game against the Toffees end in huge disappointment. To make things even sweeter for Everton, the win all but secures their top-flight status for another season. Liverpool's hopes of winning the title in Klopp's final season now look extremely slim indeed, and the German spoke about the situation after the game.

Klopp offered up the following response about Liverpool's title hopes after the game in an interview with Sky Sports: "Arsenal and Manchester City must have a very bad moment. I don't know. I can only apologise for today to the people. We should have done better but we didn't and that's why we lost.

"Obviously very disappointed about a lot of things. We let it happen, then it became exactly the game Everton wanted.

"But we were not good enough, that's what we have to admit. I didn't expect that today but it happened. Obviously it's not the greatest moment we are it but you have to fight through, try to get the momentum back."

Everton have beaten Liverpool at home in the Premier League for the first time since October 2010, ending their 12-game winless run in Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park.

Liverpool must pick themselves up quickly as they return to action on Saturday lunchtime away at West Ham in the Premier League. Another fascinating weekend sees Arsenal take on Tottenham on Sunday, while Manchester City play Brighton on Thursday and Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
