THE BIGGER PICTURE
Lingard's fall from grace has been quite pronounced. A couple of years ago, he was scoring goals for fun during a loan stint at West Ham. Fast forward to the present and the attacking midfielder has since had failed trials at the Hammers and Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. The longer he stays out of the game, the less likely he will play at a top side again.

The former United academy product, who left the Red Devils permanently in 2022 for Forest on a 12-month deal, reportedlyrejected the chance to join Newcastle United or Fulham on longer-term deals. He may have been better advised to take those options as his Forest move didn't pan out as planned.
WHAT NEXT?
Lingard will continue to train on his own in the hope of staying fit and eventually finding a new team to sign for. The January transfer window opens in a matter of days but the fact that nobody has taken a punt on him as a free agent, when you can be signed at any time, is telling.
