Barcelona sporting director Deco is optimistic of Pedri signing a fresh long-term deal with the Blaugrana soon, providing deeper insights into the club's ongoing efforts to tie their star midfielder down to a new contract, in addition to those of Ronald Araujo and Gavi.
Getty ImagesPedri has found a new lease of life this season, thanks to his good fortune when it comes to fitness. The 21-year-old Spaniard endured a frustrating campaign in 2023-24, missing a total of 128 days and 25 games for club and country. Under new manager Hansi Flick, though, not only has Pedri gotten rid of his poor injury record, but has also become one of the first names on the teamsheet. With his contract expiring in 2026, the Catalans want to waste absolutely no time in securing their midfield metronome's future at the club.
”To go for a renewal the first thing you have to know is what the players are looking for, and I think they are looking to win titles, be in a competitive team and, of course, have good contracts," Deco said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo (h/t Get Spanish Football News).
"I thought that way and I think we have players who also think that way. I think Pedri’s renewal will happen because I think Pedri wants to make history at the club, he feels comfortable here, he is happy, he wants to win titles, he is back at his best after working hard, understanding that there was work behind him that he had to do after so many years of suffering a lot with many games and injuries.
"He has understood it and has seen that he had to work in a different way, improve, and he was on time. We will do the renewal, he has this season and another one left. We are focused on winning important things this season, but also on guaranteeing the future of important players and Pedri is one of them.”
AFPPedri has been called up for Spain's upcoming Nations League games against Denmark and Switzerland along with four more Barca players: Pau Cubarsi, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and Marc Casado, who received his maiden call-up by Luis de la Fuente.
