Terrible scenes at Hamburg as at least 25 people rushed to hospital after pitch invasion for HSV's Bundesliga promotion party causes serious injuries

Fans erupted in joy and ran towards the pitch in a frenzied mass as Hamburger SV thrashed Ulm 6-1 at Volksparkstadion Stadium on Saturday and confirmed their promotion to the third division. The win at home helped Hamburger SV retain the top spot in Bundesliga 2 as they increased their lead over third-placed SV Elversberg to four points.

Following the full-time whistle, wild scenes erupted at the stadium. A massive rescue operation had to be conducted as one fan was left with life-threatening injuries, while 19 others were seriously hurt. A total of 44 fans had to be given on-field treatment, according to Berliner Tageszeitung.

After six failed attempts to secure a promotion, Hamburger have finally managed to achieve it as they will play in the top-flight of German football next season for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.

Merlin Polzin's side will play their final game of the season away from home against Furth on May 18.
