  • WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund are out of the UEFA Champions League. A hat trick from striker Serhou Guirassy was not enough to help Dortmund overcome a 4-0 deficit from their leg one loss to Barcelona, with the Bundesliga side exiting the competition Tuesday.

Dortmund found themselves victorious in leg two, winning 3-1, but the Spanish side advanced to the semifinals via an aggregate score of 5-3.

Reyna had substitute appearances in both games, but never managed to make an attacking impact as the Black and Yellow - who were 2024 finalists and runners-up in the competition - crashed out.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reyna's season with Dortmund has not gone to plan since returning from his 2023-24 six-month loan to Premier League side Nottingham Forest. He's made just 14 appearances in the Bundesliga, starting three matches, and in the UCL, made nine appearances, but managed just two starts.

All signs are pointing to a summer exit for the midfielder, as he looks to find regular and consistent playing time at the club level ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
