    WHAT HAPPENED?

Frankie Amaya will join LAFC for the current MLS season after spending two seasons with Toluca in Liga MX. The UCLA product arrives on loan after playing just two matches in the Clausura 2025 with the Diablos Rojos, according to GiveMeSport.

Coming from the New York Red Bulls, he played 12 matches in his debut tournament. During that span, he recorded two assists and one yellow card in 328 minutes of play.

The American midfielder only played in the first two matches of the Clausura 2025 under the Argentine coach, logging just 23 minutes. Since then, he hasn't played with the Diablos' first team.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amaya joined the Diablos Rojos in the summer of 2024 as a long-term investment, with a $3.5 million transfer from the New York Red Bulls. However, the midfielder struggled to adapt to Liga MX, and his performances declined over time.

Under Renato Paiva, he saw some playing time, but with the arrival of "Turco" Mohamed, he lost prominence until he was completely sidelined.

Toluca finished the regular season in first place and will compete in the Liguilla, which will be played on May 7-8. The early announcement of Amaya’s departure indicates that the midfielder is not part of the club’s plans - not even as a backup option - for the Quarterfinals and beyond.
