FIFA set target for inaugural Women’s Club World Cup in 2026 after breakthrough in talks with UEFA

Per The Athletic, FIFA are aiming to stage the first female Club World Cup tournament in 2026. UEFA were proving a major stumbling block to any plans, as they had hoped to see a less frequent competition arranged, but they have agreed with FIFA to a biennial competition, meaning it will be hosted every two years.

Due to the scheduling of the World Cup in 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, there is no space for a Club World Cup in the summer, meaning separate dates will have to be arranged. It remains to be seen which teams would be invited to take part, but there is a dominance when it comes to European, South and North American teams. It is also currently unclear where exactly the tournament would be held.

The men's FIFA Club World Cup tournament only began in 2000, with the cream of the crop from across the globe invited to take part. The tournament has been held in various exotic locations, including Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.

The finer details surrounding the Women's Club World Cup must be ironed out but it seems as though there is a broad agreement that the competition will take place. Beyond that, it appears that official details are thin on the ground.
