'Everyone wanted to score' - Bruno Fernandes slams Man Utd team-mates for complacency after Newport scare as he warns FA Cup glory is only way to salvage nightmare season

United had a total of 22 shots as they won 4-2 in the FA Cup fourth round clash in Wales on Sunday. Eight players made attempts on goal throughout the 90 minutes and Fernandes, who scored the opener, feels many of his co-stars could have made better decisions than trying to find the net.

He told BBC Sport: "We had chances to make the 3-0 but when you get 2-0 in these type of games everyone wanted to score and get their goal and everything and sometimes we don't get the best decision for the team. I think after we did a great job to close the game."

United will go on to face either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the next round of the competition and will be the favourites to progress to the quarter-finals. Portugal midfielder Fernandes believes the FA Cup is the Red Devils' best chance to avoid this season being a failure after they crashed out of Europe and the Carabao Cup and now sit eighth in the Premier League.

He added: "We have to understand that the FA Cup is our chance to win a trophy and we have to give everything to get into the final step by step, game by game but we know that to make the season look not as bad as it has been, we have to try to win this trophy because it is important for us, we have been in the final last year, unfortunately we did not get the trophy. We know how much the FA Cup means for our fans, our club, for the country so we know how important it is and it's important for us too. We want to get into the final and win."

Erik ten Hag's team are now unbeaten in three matches and will hope to extend that run when they take on Wolves in the Premier League on Thursday. Wolves are 11th in the table and just three points behind the Old Trafford club.
