Brazil player ratings vs Ecuador: Vinicius Jr's national team struggles continue as Selecao settle for drab draw in Carlo Ancelotti's debut

Carlo Ancelotti's tenure with Brazil got off to an uninspired start as Vinicius Jr failed to play hero and the Selecao stumbled to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Ecuador in World Cup qualifying.

Ancelotti's side struggled for rhythm during the Italian manager's highly-anticipated first fixture in charge, as Brazil were solid defensively in the first half and heavily reliant on the magic of Vinicius Jr to make things happen. But the Real Madrid winger couldn't find his footing early on, running into double and triple teams and struggling to connect with an otherwise workmanlike midfield. He had an effort well saved from a tight angle shortly before half-time.

Neither team seemed much more inclined to make something happen after the break, either. Three points here might have sealed World Cup qualification for Ecuador - depending on other results - but at times, with dogged defending and cautious attacking, they looked happy to settle for one point. Not that the visitors were much better. Brazil are a team who have been lacking in ideas for months, and it showed once again. Vinicius was the only real attacking outlet, and even with youngster Estevao Willian being handed an unexpected start, the team failed to do much with it.

Tellingly, defensive midfielder Casemiro had the best chance of them all midway through the second half, a tame strike that simply rolled into the arms of the goalkeeper. This had been that kind of game, full of intensity but devoid of quality. Still, for Ancelotti, a clean sheet and a point on the road edges his side one step closer to qualification for 2026.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson (6/10):

Bit of nervy moment when he failed to claim a cross in the first half. Made a couple of neat stops in the second, and was tidy otherwise.

    Vanderson (6/10):

Flew into his tackles with a real zeal. Didn't offer much forward progression.

    Marquinhos (8/10):

Probably Brazil's best player on the night, which is indicative of the mess that this game was.

    Alexsandro (6/10):

Decent at the back, although he struggled to deal with the physicality of Ecuardor's strike partnership.

    Alex Sandro (7/10):

An immensely experienced full-back performance. Tackled well, fouled at the right time. Showed why he is a vet.

    Midfield

    Casemiro (6/10):

Brought back into the line up by his former Real Madrid manager. Solid when the game was cagey, but exposed a little more as it opened up.

    Bruno Guimaraes (7/10):

Seemed eager to spend most of the game just smashing into people and winning tackles. Effective, but exemplifies the lack of attacking thrust in this team.

    Gerson (5/10):

The worst of the midfield trio. Completed just three passes into the final third.

    Attack

    Estevao Willian (6/10):

Lively and provided a few nice deliveries from corners, but was seldom on the ball. There will be better nights for the teenager.

    Richarlison (5/10):

Fluffed a couple of half chances, completed just nine passes, subbed after an hour.

    Vinicius Jr (7/10):

Absolutely deadly at times on the wing, and set up his team-mates on a fair few occasions. But was also infuriatingly flat at others. His international struggles continue.

    Subs & Manager

    Matheus Cunha (5/10):

    Remarkably ineffective off the bench.

    Gabriel Martinelli (5/10):

Probably the wrong sub as he looked to stretch a game that didn't have much space.

    Andrey Santos (5/10):

Extra legs in midfield, but didn't bring any creativity.

    Andreas Pereira (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Carlo Ancelotti (6/10):

A big night for the Italian, and his team delivered in some ways. The point is agreeable, as is the clean sheet - even if he would have liked a win.
