'Smile says it all' - Arsenal star Leah Williamson reacts after returning to Lionesses squad for first time since ACL injury

As the Lionesses commenced preparations for their forthcoming Euro 2025 qualifying matches, Williamson trained diligently at St. George's Park, albeit separately from the main squad, adhering to an individualised program tailored to her specific rehabilitation needs. Nonetheless, her return to the national team setup signifies a momentous step forward in her journey to reclaim her position on the international stage, following the unfortunate ACL injury that dashed her hopes of participating in the 2023 Women's World Cup.

To mark her return, the English skipper posted a heartfelt message on her Instagram handle that read: "The smile says it all."

Despite her commendable recovery, Williamson faced setbacks on her road to full fitness. Initially called up for England's friendlies against Austria and Italy in February, she was compelled to withdraw from the squad due to a hamstring injury. She last featured in an international match in April 2023 in a 2-0 defeat against Australia.

Despite her resolute determination to regain full fitness, Williamson encountered a minor setback during the Conti Cup final between Arsenal and Chelsea, where she was substituted at halftime due to a medical situation. Gunners manager Jonas Eidevall clarified that Williamson's substitution was a precautionary measure to prevent further injury, ensuring her long-term well-being. Nevertheless, she did join her team-mates to celebrate as Arsenal clinched the title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

England face formidable challenges in their upcoming Euro 2025 qualifying matches against Sweden and Republic Ireland, scheduled for April 5 and 9, respectively. It remains to be seen if Sarina Wiegman hands Williamson a start in those fixtures or chooses to ease her back by using her in a reduced role.
