Madrid reaffirmed to Carreras their desire to sign him despite no agreement with Benfica, according to Spanish outlet Marca. The Spanish side had hoped to sign him before the Club World Cup, but he will represent the Portuguese team at the competition instead. They have been in touch with the 22-year-old to let him know they will definitely come for him.

With Benfica president Rui Costa facing no support from other members of the board and having his budget plans rejected, Madrid feel that they could use it as a bargaining chip to agree on a fee.
