Madrid reaffirmed to Carreras their desire to sign him despite no agreement with Benfica, according to Spanish outlet Marca. The Spanish side had hoped to sign him before the Club World Cup, but he will represent the Portuguese team at the competition instead. They have been in touch with the 22-year-old to let him know they will definitely come for him.

One of the explicit requests of new manager Xabi Alonso was for the club to bring in a new left-back, and Madrid have been in talks with Benfica for the past three weeks. With Benfica president Rui Costa facing no support from other members of the board and having his budget plans rejected, Madrid feel that they could use it as a bargaining chip to agree on a fee.

Madrid are close to completing the signing of 17-year-old Franco Mastantuono from River Plate, with a deal to be finalised after he represents the Argentine team at the Club World Cup. River Plate are hopeful of convincing Madrid to let him stay until January.
