Manchester United vulnerable as high-flying Wolves visit Old Trafford

Manchester United taking on a promoted team at Old Trafford is usually a foregone conclusion - having lost only one of the last 49 matches at home against clubs who have come up from the Championship.

But Sunday's (12am AEST) match at Wolves feels a bit different, with the Red Devils still nowhere near the best and their opponent likely to be fearless.

Wolves under Nuno Espirito Santo have started their Premier League campaign in style, playing an attractive brand of football, gathering eight points from five matches and currently residing in ninth position in the standings - one spot behind Manchester United.

After failing to win any of their first three league games but achieving solid draws against Everton and Manchester City, the men in orange have won their last two Premier League games 1-0 - against West Ham and Burnley.

What has been most impressive is their relentless style of play, with three centre-halves forming the base of an attacking formation that's designed to get their most out of their flair players.

Portuguese playmakers Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho have excelled so far and Mexican striker Raul Jimenez looks dangerous heading up the attack.

Wolves haven't taken a backward step against any opponent this season - a quality evident in their 1-1 result at United's rival City - and Jose Mourinho can expect an opposition to consistently test his defence, which has completely collapsed in matches against Brighton and Tottenham.

Centre-halves Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof have been the defensive pairing in United's three consecutive wins against Burnley, Watford and Young Boys, but they haven't been totally convincing - particularly the Swede, who always looks capable of making a crucial mistake at any moment.

The introduction of Marouane Fellaini into a defensive midfield has been a masterstroke by Mourinho, solidifying a shaky defence and allowing United's attacking players to break forward with freedom.

United have recently been vulnerable in league matches following a Champions League tie, losing three of their past five, and it will be interesting to see how they recover from the synthetic pitch against Young Boys.

Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia all didn't feature against Young Boys and it's likely Mourinho rested them to be fresh for the Wolves encounter.

Sanchez has been directly involved in 19 goals in 22 Premier League appearances against promoted sides - and United fans will be hoping they finally see his top form.
