The Argentine star could miss next summerâs World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The World Cup draw has placed Argentina in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan.
In Sundayâs Premier League clash between Tottenham and Sunderland, Spurs duoâCzech goalkeeper AntonĂn KynskĂœ and Argentine Cristian Romeroâcollided violently.
Trailing 1-0 to Sunderland thanks to Nordi Mokeleâs opener, the hosts were already under pressure.
Moments later, Sunderlandâs Bryan Robey inadvertently pushed Romero into KinskĂœ as the goalkeeper rushed back to collect the ball, sparking further alarm.
After lengthy treatment on the pitch, the defender was carried off in tears.
Early indications suggest a serious knee injury, with media reporting that his World Cup participation hinges on the results of upcoming scans; the tears he shed as he left the field only deepened those concerns.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi told the clubâs official website: âWe will know more about the extent of Romeroâs injury in the coming days.â
Pressed for details at his post-match news conference, the Italian added: âWe donât know yet; weâll have to see in the next match, in the coming days. I hope it isnât a major problem for us, because heâs a key player for us; heâs a wonderful person, an excellent player, a top-class player, and a strong character, and we need him to finish the season and achieve our goal.â
Argentine journalist GastĂłn Idul, who specialises in news about the national team, posted a video on his X account saying: âCristian Romero is suffering from knee instability and will undergo ligament tests to determine whether he has torn his medial collateral ligament or merely suffered a bruise⊠The pain is there.â
