Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak coach David Duncan is hoping that reforms being undertaken by the Ghanaian government in the wake of a recent corruption scandal of the football association would help to make the Premier League Board (PLB) a more efficient unit.
Activities are underway to "sanitize" football in the country after an investigative documentary exposed corrupt and match-fixing activities of top FA officials and referees.
For the struggling domestic league, which has been greatly affected by the exposé, the belief is that its fortunes could have been better were it not under the control of the FA.
“As government wants to bring reforms into our game, they should do well and help to improve our local clubs as well,” Duncan told 442gh.
“It is important we get the right people with the right expertise on the [Premier League] board to run the local league.
“The board should not be made up of friends and comrades.
"The PLB board should be totally independent from the GFA, so that the FA does not have direct influence on the board.
“This will improve the image of the league and the PLB can aim at securing more sponsorship.
"That is [what] the likes of Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, among other countries, are doing for their clubs.”
Owing to the exposé, all football matches have been suspended indefinitely as government continues its cleansing programme.
The Premier League is undoubtedly the biggest domestic competition affected by the embargo.
This season's championship had reached its halfway line before the scandal took centre stage.
