Ferguson pays tribute to 'little runt' Scholes at charity dinner

Sir Alex Ferguson said Paul Scholes was a "little runt" when he joined Manchester United, speaking in a video message at a tribute dinner for his former player.

Ferguson had not made a public appearance in two months, last speaking to thank medical staff who treated him after he suffered a brain haemorrhage in May.

But, talking on video at a charity dinner in Scholes' honour, Ferguson was in jovial mood.

"When he joined us as a little runt of a lad at 13 years of age he was about four foot 10 or something and we had great doubts whether he’d grow," Ferguson said at the event organised by the Association of Former Manchester United Players.

“Fortunately he did and he became the player we all saw. Over 718 games and 155 goals, absolutely fantastic career.

“And bearing in mind he had some injury problems which would have put him him alongside Ryan and Sir Bobby I am sure of that.

“That apart, what a career... and the goals he scored – unbelievable.

“He was the absolute perfect player and no matter how many great players we have had in the past at Manchester United, Paul sits in the great pantheon of those players, there is no question about that.

“And I had read one or two bits by former players, Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo and they all recognise him as the best English player of all time and that is some accolade that.

“So, Paul, enjoy the night, sorry I’m not there to enjoy the celebration, well done for a fantastic career and a great human being.”

The 76-year-old's message has been spread across social media and Scholes, now a pundit for BT Sport, also gave a speech during the event which was held at Old Trafford.

“I hate slagging United off when I'm on TV but if they've played badly you have to," the former England international said.

“But I don't think I'm that bad. I've been unfortunate that there have been a few times when I've been covering their games they've not done very well.”

Asked which of his 155 United goals Scholes looks back on with the most fondness, he chose the 25-yard volley against Aston Villa in December 2006.

“They always look good when they go in off the bar. Maybe it wasn't the most important in terms of a match but that was one that gave me a lot of satisfaction” said Scholes.
