Exclusive: Wrexham star Paul Mullin confesses he's barely seen any of Ryan Reynolds' films & recalls 'mental' phone call with Rob McElhenney

  • Mullin and Reynolds are firm friends
  • But Wrexham striker hasn't watched his movies!
  • Mullin hoping to impress again this season

WHAT HAPPENED? Reynolds purchased the Red Dragons along with fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney back in 2021. After missing out on promotion during their first season at the helm, Wrexham romped to the National League title last campaign, with Mullin plundering 38 goals. Reynolds has often spoken of his love for the club's star striker, but the movie star may be disappointed to learn that he is not an avid watcher of his on-screen work.

WHAT THEY SAID: Asked about his favourite Reynolds film in the latest episode of GOAL's Box to Box series, he said: "I actually enjoyed Red Notice but I’m not a big film person, I don’t tend to watch many films. I knew Rob as Mac in It’s Always Sunny because I watch the show. So I’ve probably spent more time watching Rob’s sitcom than I have Ryan’s movies!"

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Mullin joined the club from Cambridge United in 2021, having finished top scorer in League Two the previous season. McElhenney rang him personally to discuss a possible transfer, a phone call that the Merseyside-born frontman found slightly surreal.

"When I first received the phone call it was from Rob himself," he said. "It was quite strange being sat on the couch and it came up: Beverly Hills calling you. It’s quite mental. When I answered the phone, that’s when I realised they’re [Reynolds and McElhenney] just like us. Normal human beings like everyone else. They come over and sit with us, they have dinner, they spend time with us and speak to us all the time. They genuinely are just nice people, just down-to-earth. What you see on camera is always what you get. When the cameras aren’t there, they don’t change. If I was to call any of the owners I’m pretty sure they’d pick up if they weren’t too busy."

WHAT NEXT? Mullin will be hoping to continue his fine form in a Wrexham shirt this season as Phil Parkinson's side looks to achieve back-to-back promotions.
