Carrick withdraws from England squad through injury

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has withdrawn from the England squad due to injury.

The Three Lions qualified for Euro 2016 with a 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday, with James Milner and Jonjo Shelvey making the cut ahead of the former Tottenham man.

Having previously been tipped to make a return to the starting line-up against Switzerland on Tuesday, the 34-year-old will not be afforded the opportunity to improve on his 33 caps as he returns to Old Trafford for treatment.

The news will come as a blow to Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal, who has utilised the midfielder in all four of the club's Premier League clashes so far this season.
