Wrexham’s transfer targets revealed - including one surprise position - as Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney aim for back-to-back promotions

With just under a week of the winter transfer window to go, Wrexham are still eyeing up additions to strengthen their promotion push.

While manager Phil Parkinson has said he's happy with his current squad, the club's recruitment department are working behind the scenes on a number of options to improve the team.

The Athleticreport that central defence has been identified as an area that could be addressed. On the surface, the Reds are spoilt for choice at the position, but a number of fitness issues have forced midfielder Tom O'Connor to fill in for much of the season.

Injuries in attack also mean the club may recruit a striker. Wigan Athletic's Stephen Humphrys has been identified as one target although there has yet to be a formal bid.

As was the strategy in the National League, Wrexham will be eyeing talent that can perform if the club make the step up to League One next season. Arrivals such as James McClean, George Evans and Steven Fletcher last summer underline the club's determination to recruit from the higher levels, a strategy famously executed when convincing Paul Mullin to drop from League Two Cambridge United into non-league.

Wrexham broke their transfer record when they paid AFC Wimbledon £300,000 for the services of striker Ollie Palmer in January 2022. Along with McClean and Ben Tozer, three of Wrexham's most expensive signing have come since the arrival of Reynolds and McElhenney as owners.

It promises to be a hectic week behind the scenes at Wrexham with the club's transfer gurus working away behind the scenes while the current squad backed by an extraordinary following of 7,000 fans travel to Lancashire on Monday night for an FA Cup fourth-round clash with Blackburn Rovers.
